Research on the world of travel
To fly does not mean
to flap wings to move from
one place to another.
Even… a gnat can do this.

One could always learn to fly,

The collection presented in the "The art of travel" exhibition was earlier displayed as a part of "the Charm of the East" exposition of the Sverdlovsk Regional Museum of Local History. The objects belonged to а Ural priest, Georgiy Ignat'evich Levitsky who made a long journey from Kronstadt to Japan in 1894-1896.
Six sections contained items of china, ritual plastic arts, things from Japan, China and several other countries (the theme "How to start a collection"), pieces of furniture. Visitors were pulled by diversity of antiques, some of them – captured by the Japanese culture – participated in a collaborative project.

We were interested in putting this story from a different angle.

As we discussed earlier our exhibition concept was built on man-centered approach. The museum exhibits and the borrowed artifacts conveyed personal stories, problematized travel as the art and culture - a set of styles, ways, practices, states, and possibilities. To invoke visitors "selves" we created participatory zones where visitors could vote, answer questions, state their opinions, learn what others thought. It had to produce three important effects:

  • To perceive travel as a state, certain lifestyle, mood, process;
  • To ignite reflections on personal life, travel practice, to give more thoughts about themselves, to rethink ways to travel, to arise desire to start the journey;
  • To facilitate communication – between visitors, visitors and story-tellers, visitors and exhibition developers.
Research in the field of History, Sociology, Cultural studies, Psychology of Travel in combination with plenty of personal stories, voices of those who lived and live on the road, passion to open the world, became the key to our Travel story. We shall not overtire the reader with the detailed account of the exposition creation. We invite you to delve into this wonderful world.

Each of you has several biographies. One of them is associated with a spatial dimension of our lives. Geobiography – we called it so – is a result of many facts, internal and external circumstances, planned and sudden incidents. Anyway, we all come through 5 significant stages:
